Everest Base Camp Honeymoon

Telling someone you’ve decided to go to Nepal to trek to the Everest Base Camp sounds like something out of the Indiana Jones movies. People instantly picture suspension bridges, below zero temperatures and the walk to the very top of the highest mountain in the world (especially if you’ve seen the movie, Everest).

October honeymoon in the high Himalayas

However, the reality is quite different. Everest Base Camp trek has become one of the most popular destinations in Nepal. Herds of tourists make their way there every October through December (totalling over 60,000 tourists in the high season of 2018, leaving the locals a little irritated).

One of the most beautiful hikes in the world

I got married in September 2018, so my husband and I decided to do something crazy for our honeymoon. After some web surfing, we came to a unanimous decision – October is the perfect time to trek a dream destination – the Everest Base Camp (EBC). The Google video below does a fantastic job of capturing the spirit of the hike. If you were on the fence about going, watch it and then think again.

Most online sources pointed out that the main route to the EBC will require lots of patience as you have to walk with a kilometre-long line of guided groups on narrow trails which you share with yaks and donkeys carrying goods to higher elevations. We decided to try out the newer and more challenging route –  the Three Passes Trek to avoid the crowds. This route goes over the three magnificent passes with a side trek to the Everest Base Camp.

Will you learn something new about the Everest Base Camp trek?

So if there are so many sources online about these treks, why would I write yet another one, you ask? Well, the answer is simple. I read many blogs on the Everest Base Camp trek, and the Three Passes Trek bought the Lonely Planet guide. I still managed to overpack, underestimate how quickly altitude sickness can creep up on you, and forgot to pack a few essential things I regretted not packing so much on the trek. All these are the reasons for me to write yet another series of posts on trekking the Three Passes Trek that other trekkers will hopefully find useful.

It was by far the most challenging trek I’ve ever done, but it was entirely worth it, and I fell in love with Nepal and will, for sure, plan a trip there again. In the following posts about my honeymoon to the Everest Base Camp over the Three Passes Trek, I covered places we stayed at we spent along the way, trail conditions and more. I hope you find this info useful for your trek in the high Himalayas.

Bon voyage!
